Ground-based remote sensing instruments now start to provide large amounts of information that can be exploited to track the heights of the atmospheric boundary laery and its sublayers. In addition, information can be obtained on the state of the atmosphere in the lowest layers with respect to e.g. atmospheric stability or the sources of turbulence. While aerosol-based methods are increasingly tested for the implementation across larger networks, PROBE now also aims to better coordinate activities that are exploiting turbulence or thermodynamic information.
