The distinct surface characteristics of urban areas (roughness, heat, moisture) affect processes in the atmospheric boundary layer. The resulting Urban Boundary Layer (UBL) dynamics have implications for a range of applications, including air quality, human thermal comfort, weather, greenhouse gas assessment, and urban air mobility. As cities are key to both climate change mitigation and adaptation, advanced observations of the urban atmosphere are urgently needed to support informed decision making.

The WG1 subgroup on urban environments invites anyone interested in the UBL to join this PROBE workshop. – all are welcome!

This first meeting has the objective to collect information on current and future UBL activities, ranging from profile observations, over modelling applications to needs for political decision making.

The goal of this first meeting is to get to know each other, to have an overview of the running and upcoming projects concerned with the boundary layer over cities and to initiate collaborations. Each participant is invited to present a slide summarizing their UBL projects and interests. We will try to map current ABL profile observations in or near urban settings across Europe and look more closely at possible design strategies for ABL profiling networks across larger cities such as Berlin and Paris.
